NEW REPORT REVEALS COST OF TRANSITION TO NET ZERO
The SNP has demanded the UK government’s new Energy Secretary, Claire Coutinho, commits to going further to support Scotland’s Just Transition to Net Zero, and match the financial contribution made to by the SNP Scottish Government.
It comes as a new report from Offshore Energies UK revealed £100 billion of private investment must be unlocked to safeguard energy security and reach the UK’s net-zero goal by 2050.
The SNP’s Energy spokesperson, Dave Doogan MP, called on the UK government to be more ambitious with its targets, and follow in the lead of the world-leading objectives of the Scottish Government, who plan to reach net-zero by 2045.
Commenting, Dave Doogan MP said:
“This report should serve as a wake up call for the UK government and the new Energy Secretary who must now make an urgent commitment to support Scotland’s Just Transition efforts and to join our world-leading efforts to hit net-zero by 2045.
“We recognise the need to move away from oil and gas, but that must not come at the cost of jobs in the North East, and the world-leading expertise we have in our thriving Scottish energy sector.
“To that end the SNP Scottish Government have pledged £500 million already to achieve that Just Transition, but we’re still waiting on the Tories to follow suit.
“Their failure so far to match that figure is telling of their dismissiveness not just to the planet's greatest challenge, but to the Scottish jobs and investment reliant on the energy sector.
“Scotland’s energy sector is being let down by the Tories, and although we’ll continue to press them to do the right thing by matching our investment, it’s clear we can best focus on maintaining our support for our vital sector and achieve our ambitious goals with the full powers of independence.”
